It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout.
The client is a leading Italian company in the transport and logistics sector, operating with multimodal travel (road, air, sea, train), which distributes thousands of shipments daily, to both national and international customers.
In this scenario, where full and groupage shipments are handled, the breakdown of costs is very complex and has to be re-proportioned according to revenue in order to obtain a centralised and certified system. Marginality is calculated on a daily basis and can be analysed by different dimensions: business unit, customer, geographical area, agent down to the detail of the individual shipment.
An algorithm was also developed in the project for defining company bonuses for the sales force with marginality and turnover as the main driver.
To overcome this challenge, a Data Warehouse (DWH) system was developed which, through various processes, extracts and calculates large amounts of data by applying the business logic desired by the customer. One of the most challenging elements was to apply methodologies for allocating transport costs to individual shipments, thus enabling the calculation of their profitability.
This was integrated with a number of Dashboard and Reporting applications (SAP BOBI/Qlik Nprinting) through which the relevant information is distributed daily to ‘Business Users’ as operational and strategic decision support systems.
